[Challenge] 2025. August : Let's draw Text
PENUP Main banner

There are so many kinds of texts around us.

From novels and fairy tales to newspaper articles, encyclopedias, and product manuals, they all fall under the category of written texts.

But text isn't limited to words alone.

Pictures that convey meaning or emotion, as well as photos, designs, music, and radio, are also considered audiovisual forms of text.

Even movies, dramas, architecture, exhibitions, and performances each present their own unique kinds of texts to people in different ways.

This August, our first challenge explores the theme of ‘Text’, which means a collection of consistent symbols that carry information.

Letters are said to be the basic building blocks of text.

Before letters were invented, people used drawings to communicate, but these were mainly just a way to help remember things.

Once letters were created, people began making texts and using them in many different fields.

Then, with the invention of paper and printing technology, texts started to spread all over the world.

Today, we exchange texts through digital means, and text has evolved into a new way of communication.

Even pictures are considered a form of text.

That’s because they use visual symbols like color, lines, and composition to convey meaning, and we can interpret their purpose, symbolism, and emotions.

Religious paintings explain the teachings of a religion through images.

Historical paintings often depict events and ideas, while modern art can carry metaphorical messages.

In comics, text is created through a combination of images and words.

For our challenge this month, you could create your own artwork filled with different intentions, backgrounds, and messages.

Text is constantly evolving.

It used to be centered around written characters, but now it stretches into sound, images, and video.

Content that once just delivered fixed meanings to the reader is changing, and readers often actively participate in how text is interpreted and experienced.

Also, the shift from paper to digital is happening faster than ever.

New ways of delivering text are also emerging, including the use of virtual reality and other advanced technologies.

What kinds of texts come to your mind right now?

From works made out of letters to pictures filled with meaning and symbolism, texts come in many shapes and forms.

Try taking on this month’s challenge by expressing a variety of texts in your artwork.

This will be proceeded for 15 days.

From August. 1, Fri. (GMT) to August. 15, Fri. (GMT).
