Flowers were said to be one of the important motifs for the painter Camille Pissarro.

He captured his impressions of nature, what he saw and felt, through the free and natural forms of flowers in his paintings.

The flowers he depicted, rendered with delicate colors and textures, are full of vibrant change and still convey his deep affection for nature even today.

Artist @-JelDa-, who has been selected for May’s Hall of Fame, also expresses a deep affection for nature through a wide variety of flowers.

The artist’s feed is filled with beautiful flowers, each exuding its own unique fragrance.

By showcasing different types of flowers that change with the seasons and ever-shifting landscapes, the artist reveals the beautiful colors and lines found in nature.

Alongside this, the works also capture the sparkle of changing light and, through figures depicted in harmony with nature, convey the grandeur of the living, breathing natural world.

We have to ask the artist how they came to draw these works.

So, let's start the interview with the artist.

On behalf of everyone at the PENUP team, we’d like to congratulate you on being inducted into our Hall of Fame in May 2025.

Please briefly introduce yourself and tell us about your thoughts on selection.

A1. @-JelDa-

Hello! Everyone, “Apa khabar?”.

Greetings from Malaysia.

I would like to extend my gratitude to PENUP team for having me as HOF of May.

Again, Thank You so much PENUP team.

Also thanks to all PENUP pals around the world, those spending their time to read my interview notes.

I really appreciated that.

On 1st May, suddenly I have received many notifications, it sparked my curiosity and to my surprise I have been selected for the HOF of May.

I knew it, in PENUP, there were many talented artists far better than me.

It felt like an early present for my birthday which falls on 3rd May.

Even though my major is in an engineering [electronic and communication] I am passionate about drawing and finding solace in art.

Many wonderful artworks by other artists in PENUP became an inspirations for me to keep drawing & learning to improve myself.

Q2. @PENUP

You first post dates back to June 2023.

How did you find out about PENUP, and what inspired you to share your work on PENUP?

A2. @-JelDa-

Yeah, my 1st posting was about coloring pages I had discovered in PENUP app and photo from my friend as my reference for my very 1st landscape drawing.

In the year 2023, I had bought new phone, S23 Ultra, while scrolling the phone, checking every features and try out the S-pen, there’s small screen pop up and “cute paper plane” lcon captured my attentioned.

Without hesitation, I clicked on it, wow!

I was amazed by many beautiful artworks, either coloring or drawing.

Every artist have their own unique ways to deliver their artworks.

That’s inspired me to start drawing and sharing my artworks in PENUP.

Q3. @PENUP

Your paintings are always full of beautiful colors and expressions.

What kind of devices and apps do you use to create your artwork?

A3. @-JelDa-

Only PENUP for me, no other app.

The simpler the better for a an amateur like me.

I’m still using my phone till now.

I found it quite troublesome to try/learn something new, unless I have too.

Besides, PENUP app have been updated & still updating sooner or later.

If possible, I love to express every detail of my painting through colors, shapes, lines or anything to make it more realistic, but my skill still lacking everywhere.

I do admired those artist with this ability and I have watching many tutorials, videos and ETCs to improve myself.

Q4. @PENUP

We can see works depicting scenes from nature.

What inspired you to start drawing?

A4. @-JelDa-

I was from east Malaysia, 62% of my state covered by forest.

My passion & love for the nature had inspired me to draw the nature sceneries.

Some of my painting was inspired by true events [my friends gave me their photo], others just my imaginations & I do google/pinterest as my reference too.

Moreover, moving to another city, I have to quit from my job and became a full-time housewife.

Taking care of my four children quite demanding for me plus with hectic shcedules ruling the day.

I need to do something to ease my mind.

For that reason, during my free time, while istening to my favourite songs I turn to PENUP and start sketching out.

Q5. @PENUP

Among numerous elements of nature, we noticed that you often depict flowers, which come in many colors and varieties.

Can you tell us why you paint flowers?

If there’s a particular meaning you wish to convey through flowers in your work, we’d love to hear about it as well.

A5. @-JelDa-

Indeed, flower is one of my favourite.

I like everything about flowers.

I love wild flowers [any kind] the most, they are rare and unique. ☺

Flowers remind me of my late mom too.

In the evening, she love spending times at the front yard of our house, planting any kind of flowers, but i noticed that, aster flowers are the most planted.

Irony is, there are always wild daisies blooming vibrantly alongside the asters.

This memory vividly remembered by me.

“A mother’s love is a bond that transcends time and distance, a love that will always be felt in our hearts.”

Q6. @PENUP

We also see natural landscapes in your work that reflect the changing seasons.

Why do you paint landscapes?

How do you choose which landscape of place to paint?

A6. @-JelDa-

When we see beautiful nature, as a painter myself, I want to put everything on the canvas.

Landscape painting is the best option.

As I said before, some of my landscape painting was from my imaginations, like four seasons. ☺

I’m living on the line of Khatulistiwa, experiencing consistent warm, humid weather year-round.

There are no seasons like winter with snow, only variations in rainfall.

Some of my landscape painting ideas coming from other source such as google image or other website platform.

Q7. @PENUP

We noticed that you capture a variety of light effects in your landscapes.

Can you tell us why you use these effects?

A7. @-JelDa-

Light is the essence of life.

Even in nature, light give a wonderful view of nature to the viewer, look at sunset view!

It looks stunning isn’t it? ☺

I often used light to convey the passage of time or emphasize a specific time of day in my painting.

Also, variations in light and shadow in painting was to create a sense of morning, noon, evening, or night.

Light effect used to enhance the storytelling and visual impact of the artworks too.

Q8. @PENUP

We see people or figures appearing in your landscapes.

What kind of people do you choose to include in your paintings?

A8. @-JelDa-

People figures in my painting was people that I have been encountered in the past at certain places or events.

Sometimes, I was painting myself, my family members, friends and others were from my imaginary images.

Q9. @PENUP

We enjoyed the beautifully colored works as well.

What type of coloring designs do you like to choose when you want to do some coloring?

And what themes would you like to draw or paint in the future?

A9. @-JelDa-

For coloring, I prefer mix & match colors to enhance the picture.

Used light to convey the passage of time.

Add on other image/picture to create more unique outcome.

Near future, I want to learn how to draw animals or portraits.

These are my weaknesses in painting.

For the theme, there is no plan for me to change my theme.

I love nature and stick to that. ☺

Q10. @PENUP

I wish PENUP community always keeping the good vibes.

Well done! PENUP TEAM.

Thank You for this kind of opportunity. ☺

Adios. God bless all!

What did you think of our interview with @-JelDa-?

Camille Pissarro is said to have expressed his feelings by painting flowers that his wife loved.

The artist also expresses her love for nature by capturing a variety of flowers in her works.

If you’re reading this, why not try drawing a flower yourself with special meaning in your own art?

You might also enjoy drawing a flower you wish to have or one you would like to give as a gift.

With the calendar turning over to May, we hope to see fragrant and beautiful flowers filling up our feed on PENUP.
