The word 'landscape' encompasses a wide variety of scenes.
It can refer to the familiar sights of our homes and surroundings that we see every day, or to the scenery of a park where we take a walk, or the cityscape we encounter on our way to work.
We might also think of grasslands or high mountains we come across while traveling, flowing valleys, or the sea with its rolling waves and sandy shores.
Beyond these, we can imagine exotic landscapes such as tropical rainforests, sandy deserts, or polar regions covered in ice and snow.
The first challenge theme for May is ‘Landscape,’ the appearance of nature and the environment that evokes a wide range of emotions.
Landscape painting has developed differently in the East and the West.
In the East, landscape art evolved to express feelings and sensibilities, often depicting distorted or abstracted scenery to explore harmony with nature and inner reflection.
In contrast, Western landscape painting focused on drawing what was seen or expressing scenes in a dramatic way, using techniques like perspective, light, and atmosphere to convey reality or emotion.
Today, landscapes are depicted in a variety of ways, combining traditional methods with abstract or symbolic expressions.
There are also many unique landscapes around the world.
For example, the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia are known as the world’s largest mirror during the rainy season, when water collects on the surface.
There are many other mysterious landscapes around the world, such as Turkey’s Pamukkale hot springs, which look as if they’re covered in snow and ice.
The glowing beaches of the Maldives, where bioluminescent plankton light up the night, and the aurora seen in the Nordic regions are also awe-inspiring examples.
So, for the challenge, one idea could be to capture the scenery of a place you want to visit in a painting.
Landscapes are said to have a wide range of appeal.
From red sunsets and misty forests to crashing waves at sea, the endlessly changing colors evoke countless emotions.
Along with this, the ever-changing weather and seasons bring together fleeting beauty and the unchanging presence of nature, offering moments for reflection and rest.
