Lines are an element of drawing.
They can create various shapes, and also determine how objects, people, and nature look.
Lines can range from simple forms to delicate and intricate expressions, and sometimes, you can draw only the outlines of an object or create an entire picture with a single line.
Additionally, there are various forms of line drawings, from thick and rapidly moving impressionistic lines to abstract or dotted lines, and lines that depict a sense of motion.
Our second challenge this January is about ‘Line Drawing,’ which is a fundamental skill used in drawing.
Line drawing can be traced back to as far as prehistoric murals.
Later, in ancient Egypt and Greece, line drawing was used to emphasize the forms and proportions of various gods.
In the Middle Ages, simple expressions became more popular, and during the Renaissance period, techniques to draw more intricate lines stemming from anatomical studies developed at a rapid pace.
Then, as modern art emerged and various art movements appeared, the types of line drawings also became more diversified.
In particular, line drawing using a single line developed alongside abstract art.
Picasso and Henri Matisse captured movement and emotion with a single line, whereas Alexander Calder expressed the essence of animals using lines.
Today, line drawing is often used for spontaneous emotional expression and to make a strong impression in graphic and logo design.
So, for this month’s challenge, trying your hand at line drawing with a single line might be a good idea.
Now, what transformed line drawing into a new form is digital drawing.
Traditional tools have evolved thanks to the addition of colors and effects, and these new elements have developed original line drawing techniques into various styles and created a new visual language.
This helps convey different forms and emotions, and it develops line drawing further as a means of artistic experimentation.
What kind of line drawing comes to your mind right now?
Use different artistic styles of line drawing and challenge yourself to see if you can use lines to express all of the themes and imaginations that pop into your head.
This will be proceeded for 16 days.
From January. 16, Thu (GMT) to January. 31, Fri (GMT).
The challenge is running based on GMT.
Therefore, the start and end times differ depending on time zone of each country, so please refer to GMT time when uploading your work.
We look forward to your participation and amazing works!
Thank you.
