Caspar Friedrich was a renowned German Romantic landscape painter.

He often tried to convey deep reflections on the inner self of human beings and the awesomeness of nature that goes beyond just recreating existing landscapes.

He incorporated contrasts of light and detailed descriptions, which could bring his audience to, sometimes, engage in deep reflection on their own existence, as well as nature and the universe.

Artist @bessbess, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame this September, also shows different perspectives on nature by incorporating emotions into landscapes.

The artist has a portfolio filled with beautiful landscapes.

With delicate descriptions, colors, and the use of light and shadow, various changes in nature are expressed.

Moreover, the mystical charm of nature is shown, often including natural phenomena such as fog, volcanic eruptions, and lightning.

We can't wait to ask @bessbess about artworks through an interview.

Now, let us begin our interview with the artist.

Q1. @PENUP

Hello, @bessbess!

On behalf of everyone at the PENUP team, We’d like to congratulate you on being inducted into our Hall of Fame in September 2024.

Please briefly introduce yourself and tell us your thoughts on selection.

A1. @bessbess

Thank you, PENUP!

I am so excited to be chosen for September's Hall of Fame.

I grew up doing lots of arts and crafts and in the summertime camping in the moutains and at lakes and on a few ocasions at the ocean, giving me an appreciation for the wonder and beauty of nature.

I work in retail and love reading, art, and being creative.

I drew a bit in school, but it wasn't until later when I decided to try my hand with acrylic painting that my art adventure began.

Q2. @PENUP

You started posting your work in April 2021.

How did you find out about PENUP, and what inspired you to share your work on PENUP?

A2. @bessbess

I saw my sister-in-law coloring a PENUP coloring page.

I thought the app looked interesting.

So I decided to download the app and give it a try, and found it actually came with my phone.

I immediately started looking through coloring pages to try my hand at coloring with absolutely no idea that my art world was about to change from acrylic painting to digital.

I was so nervous the first time I posted on PENUP, but when I got my first heart, I was amazed that someone liked my art, and I was hooked!

Q3. @PENUP

You seem to enjoy painting landscapes and nature using beautiful colors.

What kind of devices and apps do you use when you’re drawing?

A3. @bessbess

I started drawing on my Galaxy Note 10+, then later bought a Galaxy Tab S7 FE so I could draw on a larger screen.

I still draw on my phone whenever I am on the go.

Q4. @PENUP

You paint everything when it comes to landscapes, from the sea to the mountains and the sky.

What inspired you to draw and paint in the beginning?

A4. @bessbess

I was going through a hard time and was looking for an outlet for all my emotions.

I always wanted to paint, so I bought paints and started painting with absolutely no idea what I was doing.

It was the beging of this amazing journey.

A few years later, I went to a group painting event and also discovered YouTube painting tutorials.

This is when I actually started to learn some painting basics and growing as an artist.

I still have much learning and growing in my art to do.

Q5. @PENUP

We were particularly mesmerized by the way that nature appears to flow through your beautiful scenery.

Why do you paint landscapes and what kind of scenery do you like to draw?

A5. @bessbess

I am in awe of the beauty of nature.

I am completely obsessed with trees, clouds, and mountains.

The mountains, forests, lakes, and sunsets where I live are endlessly beautiful and constantly inspiring me to draw.

Q6. @PENUP

Various natural phenomena also appear in your work.

Why do you enjoy working on these types of paintings?

And where do you find the inspiration for your landscapes featuring natural phenomena?

A6. @bessbess

The PENUP challenges I participated in have challenged me to stretch my horizons and try new things.

Most of the natural phenomena I have drawn are inspired by the bi-monthly challenges on PENUP.

Q7. @PENUP

Among the various types of trees, the one standing alone really caught our eye.

Does the tree mean something in particular, and if so, what does it mean?

A7. @bessbess

The lone tree standing tall, whether robust and healthy, or bare and scraggly, call to me.

I find them so full of character, emotion, and beauty.

Q8. @PENUP

Recently, you’ve painted some works depicting planets and space.

Is there a reason behind that?

A8. @bessbess

I find myself binge watching spray paint street art on YouTube from time to time.

This inspired me to test out the layer feature to see if I could get a similar effect.

I had so much fun creating these pieces that I decided to try incorporating them into my regular style of landscapes.

The results turned out amazing.

Q9. @PENUP

We also found some coloring pieces on your feed.

What type of coloring designs do you like to choose when you want to do some coloring?

And if there’s a subject you’d like to work with in the future, what would you like to paint?

A9. @bessbess

The coloring pages are such an awesome part of PENUP.

They gave me a place to start learning and experimenting with all the brushes and pallets.

They challenged me to try drawing things I would not generally choose, getting me out of my box and comfort zone.

I'd say just keep offering a wide range of subjects and styles as you already do.

Q10. @PENUP

Last question.

Please let us know if there is anything you would like to see improved while using PENUP, or if there is anything you would like to say.

A10. @bessbess

I truly love PENUP and everyone who has enjoyed, supported, and encouraged my art.

Thank you!

As for changes, I love the new brushes and all the options and flexibility they provide, but if at all possible, I would love to see the old brushes incorporated back in.

I miss all them and all they had to offer.

I also love layers and pixels.

I can never have enough.

Thank you PENUP Team and all the community members for your valuable support, I don’t have words to explain how happy I am to be in this place!

Looking forward to publish more works and see many creators grow within this platform.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to be part of this great community.

How was the interview with @bessbess?

Friedrich said that you should draw not only what is in front of you, but also what you see in your heart.

Like so, emotions felt when observing nature are also expressed in works through lines and colors.

If you’ve read our interview, why not look around and see what your scenery looks and feels like, and channel those emotions to create something genuine and new?

From various lines and colors to unique brushes, try expressing your emotions.

We hope to see your creativity blossom with a more insightful PENUP in the future.

Thank you.
