Purple is one of those colors you rarely get to see out in nature.
But! If you look close enough, you might find a few different shades of purple hiding in plain sight.
You’ll see purple in flowers like lavender and lilac, or in some fruits and vegetables like grapes, eggplants, cabbage, and beets.
You’ll also see purple in birds, jellyfish, and even in a handful of iguanas.
And, of course, gemstones like amethyst and spinel come in purple as well.
For our first challenge this September, we’re asking everyone to draw something that features ‘Purple’, which is often used as a symbol of dignity and honor.
In fact, purple has always been a noble color.
A long time ago, people produced purple pigment using the shell of Murex snails.
Purple cost a fortune to make and it required a lot of labor, and that’s why it was reserved for the royal family.
For a long time, the Eastern Roman Empire kept the production and supply of Tyrian purple a state secret to prevent the recipe for purple from falling into the wrong hands.
Some say when the Eastern Roman Empire fell, the secrets to making Tyrian purple were lost, and that’s why the color of emperors and cardinals changed from purple to red.
Purple can mean different things.
It can be a symbol of power and splendor.
It can be a color of mystery and dreams, which is why it is often used in paintings linked to fantasies.
On the contrary, it can be a symbol of darkness or sadness.
But purple is one of those colors we seek out at a subconscious level when our body or mind is sick, so it’s a color used for healing as well.
For our challenge this month, you could draw or paint something that features purple or what purple is a symbol for.
Although much less expensive than in ancient times, purple is still an expensive color to make.
Tyrian purple made using the ancient recipe costs more than 10 times the price of gold, and even with the development of synthetic technology, purple is more expensive than other colors.
Despite the cost, purple exudes a sense of luxury, stability, and liveliness at the same time.
It evokes a complex range of emotions and feelings, and that’s why purple is used in a variety of ways, from home appliances to interior design.
What comes to your mind when you think of purple?
From creatures or objects that are purple in color to various fantasy worlds with a purple hue, take on this month’s challenge, and send us something purple.
Take on the challenge by drawing a variety of purple colors, from creatures or objects that are purple to the imaginative use of color.
This will be proceeded for 15 days.
