The Paralympic Games is an international sporting competition where athletes with disabilities compete beyond their limitations.
In total, the Paralympics include 22 different sports with a variety of events under each sporting category.
Some examples include basketball and boccia games played on specially designed wheelchairs, track and field events that allow athletes to wear prosthetic legs made of carbon fiber, and cycling that requires pedaling with your hands rather than your feet.
Weight classes are divided only by body weight, and events like judo require athletes to use their tactile senses to go back and forth on offense and defense, whereas dressage invovesl an equestrian manipulating a horse's movements to present artistic skills for evaluation.
Our second challenge in August is about ‘THE PARALYMPIC GAMES’, and we’re hosting it in collaboration with the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The Paralympic Games was initiated as a means to treat and rehabilitate paraplegics.
It all started when a British medical doctor held a competition to help improve the strength and self-esteem of war veterans.
The competition continued to develop, and the first official Paralympic Games got underway in Rome in 1960.
In the early days, the Paralympic Games had no ties to the Olympic Games.
But when the Olympic Games Seoul 1988, the IOC agreed to host the Paralympic Games right after the Closing Ceremony for the Olympic Games.
The Paralympic Games are different from the Olympic Games in the way it is organized.
The format is adjusted so that all athletes compete under suitable conditions.
For instance, in football or goalball, the crowd has to remain silent so that the players wearing eye patches can focus on the sound of the ball.
As for the Para cycling track, tandem cycles, which are two-person bicycles, are used along with standard bicycles, and visually impaired and non-disabled athletes pair up to compete in teams.
Don’t you think it’d be fun to imagine and draw about a unique game style or competition that requires people working together to win?
This year's Paralympic Games will be held in Paris, France, from August 28 to September 8, 2024.
It’s actually the first-ever Paralympic Games hosted in France.
Reports say that the Paralympic Games will feature a never-before-seen Opening Ceremony that blends in with the cityscape, Including the Champs Elysees to the Place de la Concorde, which has the largest obelisk in Paris.
What comes to your mind when you think of the Paralympic Games?
Take on the challenge and capture various aspects of the Paralympic Games, from all the athletes working hard to compete to the unique events and magnificent scenery of the sporting venues.
