PENUP Main banner

Watermelon is one of the fruits that immediately comes to mind when you think of summer.

Although it is mostly green, it has prominent black stripes, and the flesh is juicy red.

Of course, watermelons come in different varieties.

Shape-wise most are round but some have an elongated oval shape.

Color-wise, you can get black or even yellow watermelons.

There are also these mini watermelons and apple watermelons that are much smaller than a normal watermelon.

These days, farmers can use triangular or rectangular molds to shape watermelons in whichever way they want to.

So, our first challenge for August is about that sweet and crunchy summer treat, ‘Watermelon’.

Now, watermelons have been a popular fruit for a very long time.

There are records of them being farmed in ancient Egypt, and they’re even mentioned in China's first agricultural manual.

So they go way back in human history.

Watermelons were, and still are, popular because more than 90% of a watermelon is water.

Additionally, farmers can produce large quantities with very few resources, which is why they have long been an important source of water.

People say that in ancient times, watermelons were so important and people would wait for them to ripen before crossing the desert.

There are so many ways you can enjoy a watermelon.

You can add a little salt to bring out the sweetness, or mix it with beverages like cider for a fizzy watermelon treat.

You can also use a blender to make watermelon juice, or toss in some mint and basil to make a watermelon salad.

That means, for our challenge this month, you could draw or paint food you can make with watermelon.

As a symbol, watermelon can mean many things.

Ancient Egyptians considered watermelon to be a symbol of water, the source of life.

In Greek mythology, it was considered the food of the gods.

Since watermelons grow in the summer, it, of course, represents summer.

And in some cultures, watermelons are a symbol of abundance and good fortune thanks to its hefty size and all of the seeds inside.

So, what comes to your mind when you think of watermelons?

From simple watermelons to various dishes made from watermelon, take on this month’s challenge with any type of watermelon you can imagine!
