[Challenge] 2026. April : Let's draw Circle
PENUP Main banner

Circles can be found all around us.

From clocks that tell the time to tableware we use for meals, and even buttons on our clothes, many everyday tools are made in circular shapes.

Coins we use for purchases, the wheels of transportation, as well as revolving doors and traffic lights, are easy to find around us.

Beyond these, circles can also be observed throughout nature, from the sun that lights the world to the ripples formed by falling rain, and even the rings of a tree that mark the passage of time.

The theme of the first challenge of April is one of the most fundamental shapes, ‘Circle’.

Since ancient times, the circle has been regarded as one of the most perfect shapes.

For this reason, from structures like Stonehenge to buildings such as the Pantheon and the Colosseum, many were designed with circular forms.

In ancient Greece, mathematical studies flourished, and during the Middle Ages, circles were widely used in art as symbols of sacredness and perfection.

Since the modern era, circles have been studied more deeply and have become a core concept in mathematics and science, as well as a fundamental form in mechanical technology such as wheels and gears.

The circle is said to be a fundamental shape in drawing.

When first learning to draw, a common practice is to add shading to a flat circle to turn it into a sphere.

It is also used when drawing human faces or objects like apples, as well as in depicting various natural scenes and even the universe.

Exploring different ways to draw with circles can be an enjoyable experience.

The circle has been used as a powerful symbol in art.

Mandalas, with their circular patterns and symmetrical structures, represent the truth of the universe and spiritual enlightenment, while Zen circles, drawn in a single brushstroke without closure, embody realization and emptiness.

In abstract art, circles convey formal value, cosmic ideas, and spiritual messages, and in the case of Leonardo da Vinci, they were used to express human proportions and geometric order.

What kind of circle comes to mind right now?

From the circles you encounter in everyday life, try expressing objects, architecture, and symbolic meanings through circles in your artwork and join the challenge.
