We use various kinds of boxes in our daily lives.
We receive items in different paper boxes, and sometimes we make wooden boxes to store or decorate things.
We use plastic boxes to store food, and metal boxes to keep various tools.
Boxes can be foldable or come with lids, and they can be designed with drawers or sliding mechanisms to store a wide range of items.
The theme of the first challenge in March is ‘Box’, a container made to hold things.
In ancient times, boxes were made from materials such as clay and wood.
As time passed, wooden boxes became more refined, and with the growth of trade, decorative elements also developed.
During the Age of Exploration, boxes were standardized to transport large quantities of goods, and in the Industrial Revolution, the invention of corrugated cardboard led to the birth of foldable paper boxes.
Since then, boxes have become a key component of logistics systems, playing an important role in driving industry and distribution.
Boxes are said to be objects that animals also love.
They recognize the inside of a box as their own personal space and feel a sense of comfort there, and its dark, narrow structure is said to stimulate their instinct to explore.
Common examples include cats, as well as dogs, rabbits, hamsters, parrots, and many other animals that are fond of boxes.
It would be fun to draw various animals inside boxes as well.
In art, boxes hold various symbolic meanings.
They are sometimes depicted as devices that separate reality from the inner world, and are seen as symbolic containers for memories, emotions, or secrets.
Like Pandora’s box, they can mark the beginning or end of a story, and are also used to represent limitation and oppression, or possibility and the unknown.
What kind of box comes to your mind right now?
From everyday objects to symbolic meanings and stories, try capturing different kinds of boxes in your artwork and join the challenge.
