[Challenge] 2026. February : Let's draw Quokka
PENUP Main banner

The quokka is an animal native to Western Australia.

It is the only species in the genus Setonix, and while it is similar in size to a cat, it is known for its smaller, rounder body.

Quokkas have short, dense fur in shades of brown and gray, and their well-developed hind legs allow them to move by making short hops.

Like kangaroos, they raise their young in a pouch on their belly, and they are herbivores that feed on grass and leaves.

The first challenge theme of February is ‘Quokka’, often called the happiest-looking animal in the world.

Quokkas are famous for their smiling faces.

They have round faces and short snouts, with mouths that naturally curve upward, making them appear to be smiling even at rest.

Simple actions such as eating grass or tilting their heads can change the outline of their face and the shape of their eyes, giving them a cheerful or relaxed expression.

They are gentle and curious by nature, and are known to approach people without much hesitation.

Quokkas are said to use places where they can hide their bodies as shelters.

They often take temporary refuge in densely wooded forests, bushy grasslands, or areas such as rock crevices and around tree roots.

During the day, they avoid strong sunlight and heat, and at night, they move around their surroundings in search of grass and leaves.

It might be enjoyable to draw quokkas in natural landscapes.

Quokkas are considered an ancient species of marsupial that have lived in Australia for millions of years.

They branched off from the common ancestors of kangaroos and wallabies and gradually evolved into their present form.

In the past, they lived in environments with very few external predators, which is believed to have contributed to their gentle and calm temperament.

Today, however, due to changes in climate and habitat, they are found only in parts of Western Australia and nearby islands.
