We can find many shades of white around us.
It is the color of the paper we draw on, the bowls and cups we use at meals, and even the bedding and furniture we see every day.
White is also the color of animals such as polar bears, rabbits, sheep, and certain parrots, as well as flowers like lilies, roses, and hydrangeas.
It appears in the foam of crashing waves, the mist and clouds in the sky, and the snowy landscapes that cover cities, mountains, and fields, a beauty we can only see in winter.
For 2025, the final challenge theme of the year is ‘White’, the brightest and most pure of colors.
White is said to be one of the earliest colors used by humans.
Because it could be obtained from minerals, traces of it can even be found in prehistoric cave paintings.
In Western culture, white symbolizes light, divinity, truth, or the divine itself, and it was also used for the garments of priests and philosophers to represent wisdom and restraint.
However, in East Asian cultures, white is associated with funerary customs and used as a color of death or farewell.
White is considered a simple yet powerful color.
It creates dimension and vitality by depicting skin, metal, and the sparkle of water, and acts as the space of balance, breath, and direction within a painting.
It also serves as a key color for expressing texture, conveying weight, emotion, and surface qualities, while capturing feelings such as inner calm or coldness.
It may be enjoyable to explore how white can be expressed in your artwork.
White is also known as a color of light.
Rembrandt used it with restraint on the areas touched by the strongest light, drawing the viewer’s gaze to a single point.
Vermeer expressed air and stillness through the soft whites of natural light, while Sorolla used white in his beach scenes to capture the brilliance of the sun.
What kind of white comes to your mind now?
From the various landscapes and objects in nature to the many meanings and imaginations held within white, bring your ideas into your artwork and join the challenge.
